Plan your next Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era session
This companion guide looks at the documented pillars of Olden Era—factions, maps, heroes, combat and multiplayer—and suggests practical observations you can test in your own sessions to sharpen a playstyle that is genuinely yours.
01 / THE GUIDE
Faction Matchup Study
Select two contrasting factions and list their named abilities side by side. Consider how a teleport effect might undermine a heavy charging frontline, then run a short skirmish to see how the interaction actually plays out.
- Pair life-draining creatures with resilient front-line troops to balance risk and pressure.
- Experiment with each faction's signature abilities to find synergies that suit your tactics.
02 / THE GUIDE
Chokepoint Control Routine
On a hand-crafted map, mark three chokepoints or mountain passes and practice taking each one early. Note how securing them changes your resource income and limits where enemies can appear.
- Scout chokepoints early to claim positions that control enemy movement.
- Weigh resource gathering against map control so neither front is left exposed.

03 / THE GUIDE
Hero Bonus Pairing
Recruit a hero who raises unit initiative and attach them to a fast army. Watch how turn order shifts in battle and decide whether the extra tempo is worth the recruitment cost.
- Choose heroes whose bonuses reinforce your faction's natural strengths.
- Grow experienced heroes steadily so their skills and spells keep pace with your campaigns.
04 / THE GUIDE
Focus Spending Trial
In one battle, spend Focus as soon as it accumulates on healing or defense; in another, bank it for a single high-impact moment. Compare which approach keeps more of your army alive through the decisive turns.
- Hold Focus for decisive moments, such as a clutch heal or a surprise teleport.
- Screen ranged units behind durable melee troops so they can keep firing safely.
05 / THE GUIDE
Mode Rotation Session
Play one short match against the AI, then invite a friend into a co-op or split-screen session. Compare how planning, communication and pacing differ between solo and shared play, and note which mode best suits your group.
- Coordinate roles with a co-op partner before the match so each player covers a distinct front.
- Use adjustable difficulty settings to keep AI skirmishes challenging but fair.
